Between The Woods and The Water

Swallow Barn Woodland Campsite sits in five acres of woods by the banks of the Severn Estuary, in the Forest of Dean. This is off-grid, nearly wild camping, and booking gets you exclusive use of the site and surrounding woodland and field. You’ll be sharing with no one but the badgers and the barn owl.

The site accommodates up to twenty people, either on tent pitches, or a camper van parking area. There is a covered camp kitchen, with running cold water and a large table and benches. Toilets are composting and there is a bucket shower. You are welcome to light a fire but you’ll have to collect your own firewood, but that’s the fun bit, right?  Check out the About page for more details on the site.

Swallow Barn is a smallholding that we farm according to organic and regenerative principles. We can supply seasonal vegetables from our garden and eggs from our flock of Cuckoo Marans hens.

We recently enjoyed a 5 night stay at Swallow Barn with the whole family. What an amazing campsite- truly special! The campsite itself has plenty of space, so we were able to pitch our tents in our own spots, with ample space between eachother. Having the whole site to ourselves really made a difference, and it really felt like wild camping. The bucket shower was fabulous, and is definitely a must try for any wild camping enthusiast. An enchanting woods, with multiple winding paths, is at the rear of the site - absolutely wonderful for our kids to run around and explore ( FYI it is quite steep, in case you have little ones). The hosts were lovely. When we arrived, they gave us a short tour and then left us to enjoy our experience. They did make it clear that we could come to them if we needed anything.Honestly, it was one of our favorite camping experiences.

Lovely camping site surrounded by woodland in a secluded spot, close to walking trails and beautiful forest of Dean. Amenities included compost loo, outside wooden shower and covered kitchen area. Lots of space to erect our own tents. A truly fun, relaxing and enjoyable camping holiday for the whole family.

Stunning tiered woodland grotto camping spot with all the facilities you need in one place - perfect! Fantastic homegrown vegetables grown by the very generous owners added an extra dimension to our stay. Thanks so much for sharing your harvest and space!

I took a group to Swallow Barn on Wednesday for the night. It's a beautiful site in a fantastic location 10 mins from the Forest of Dean. The on site facilities are minimal but fantastic. There's an kitchen area, compost loos, bucket shower, rope swing and an area for a fire. What more could you ask for in a campsite? Book before someone else does.

Little gem of a place! Such a nice place to escape to and only a 40 minute drive from Bristol. Loved all the activities there is to do in the area. Perfect to come back to such a peaceful spot and the outdoor kitchen was a lovely touch. So nice to see the stars so clearly too. Compost toilets and an interesting shower!!! Perfect, almost wild camping and our host Simon was very friendly and accommodating. Excited to go back!!

Magical nearly wild camping - this place is a real escape. The facilities are basic, but perfectly clean and really well thought out - composting toilets and a lovely kitchen area with a table and sink covered by a hand-built shelter. The shower bucket is a fantastic touch. But the best is having the five acres of woodland to ourselves - the kids explored and built dens and loved the rope swing. We camped as four families - perfect wild camping experience and the children's favourite campsite ever.

Camping in The Forest of Dean

This ancient Forest is rich in history and incredible wildlife. You can visit hilltop Iron Age forts, Victorian coal mines or the many castles that mark the Welsh border nearby.

If you are lucky, you might spot a sounder of boar, or glimpse the beavers that have recently been reintroduced to the area.

The forest also offers a wide range of activities. Dean mountain bike trails are some of the best in the UK, from single track to full on downhill. There is canoeing on the Severn and Wye rivers and rock climbing up the limestone crags that line the Wye Valley.

If you are looking for a gentler way to spend your day, the walking is outstanding, with Offa’s Dyke long distance path running along the western edge of the district.
