About Our Woodland Camping

Swallow Barn Wood is a tiny, nearly-wild campsite set in five acres of broadleaf woodland on the banks of the River Severn in The Forest of Dean. Booking gets you exclusive use of the site and surrounding woodland and field. If you are into stealth or wild camping, the wood is perfect. You’ll be living wild with no one but the badgers and the barn owl.

Check out the map on our location page to see the wood’s amazing setting. If you have any questions about the woodland campsite, or the Swallow Barn smallholding, don’t hesitate to get in touch via our contact page.

Pitches

The site has two large, level pitches that can each accommodate two four person tents. A smaller area will take a two person tent. There is also an area for camper van, trailer tent or car tent parking. This is nine metres by five metres. Site capacity is twenty people (under fives not included). If you have a larger party, please get in touch via our contact page. Dogs are welcome, on a lead and supervised at all times.

Facilities

The site offers nearly-wild camping. This site is off-grid, apart from mains water. There is a basic camp kitchen, with sink, table and benches. Toilets are composting and there is a bucket shower. There is a fire pit and we provide a barrow load of firewood. Extra firewood can be purchased. We don’t provide axes or saws, so you will need to bring your own, along with a camp stove.

With our almost-wild experience, our aim is to offer low impact camping and we encourage campers to tread lightly. We do not provide a refuse collection service, so you will need to remove your recycling and waste, but you can put compostable items down the toilets.

There is no electric hook-up provided.

Access

There is vehicular access to the wood, across the hay field. Access is via a grassy track. This can be navigated with a suitable wheelchair or child’s buggy, however, we can offer the use of our Land Rover should circumstances require it.

The campsite itself has level areas connected with grassy ramps, so can be moved around easily. Steep gulley’s fall away either side and we have cut steps down into these. Consequently access to the wider wood is not possible for campers with low mobility. Children under six will need to be supervised.

Booking

Book now to reserve your stay in the wood. We have a minimum booking period of two nights. We don’t charge for children under the age of five.
